How to Read, Verify, and Understand Your French Unique Producer ID (IDU)

The IDU is the 12-character ID issued by ADEME that every French marketplace checks. How to read it, how to verify it on SYDEREP, and what to do when the IDU does not appear.

The French IDU is a small text string that produces an outsized amount of operational friction. Twelve to fourteen characters, issued by ADEME, published on the public SYDEREP registry, queried by every French marketplace and by some B2B buyers. If yours is wrong, missing, or invisible, your French revenue is on hold.

This article explains exactly what the IDU is, how to read it, how to verify it, and what to do when it does not behave as expected. For the operational troubleshooting checklist when your IDU does not appear on Amazon specifically, see /guides/idu-not-on-amazon-france.

What an IDU actually is

IDU stands for Identifiant Unique Producteur — Unique Producer Identifier. It is the public-facing French EPR registration number issued by ADEME (Agence de la transition écologique) and published on the SYDEREP teleservice (Système Déclaratif des filières REP).

Two important nuances:

  • One IDU per stream, not per producer. A producer registered for packaging + WEEE + batteries has three IDUs, one each. They share the producer name on the registry but they are independent numbers, each tied to a separate eco-organism dossier.
  • Issued by ADEME, not the eco-organism. Citeo, Refashion, Ecosystem and the other eco-organisms accept your dossier, validate it, and forward it to ADEME. ADEME then issues the IDU. The eco-organism may share the number internally before publication; the public record on SYDEREP catches up within 5 to 10 business days.

Structure of the IDU

A typical IDU follows the pattern FR-XXX-NNNNNNNN, where the prefix encodes the stream and the numeric suffix is the unique identifier.

Common prefixes:

  • FR-EMB- — household packaging (filière emballages ménagers, Citeo, Léko, Adelphe)
  • FR-EEE- — WEEE / DEEE (Ecosystem, Ecologic)
  • FR-TLC- — textile, linen, footwear (Refashion)
  • FR-DEA- — furniture (Ecomaison, Valdelia)
  • FR-PIL- — portable batteries (Corepile, Screlec)
  • FR-PMCB- — building materials (Valobat, Ecominéro)
  • FR-JOU- — toys (Ecomaison)
  • FR-SPO- — sports/DIY/garden (Ecomaison)
  • FR-EPRO- — professional packaging (Citeo Pro)

The exact format has evolved over time and varies slightly between eco-organisms, but the prefix-then-number pattern is consistent. The prefix is how marketplaces route the verification — if you upload a packaging IDU to a WEEE field, the prefix mismatch causes immediate rejection.

How to verify your IDU

The public SYDEREP teleservice is at syderep.ademe.fr. The search interface accepts:

  • Legal name of the producer
  • IDU number
  • Stream (filière) filter
  • Eco-organism filter

When you find a record, the registry shows:

  • Producer name as registered (this is what marketplaces compare against, character for character)
  • IDU number
  • Stream
  • Eco-organism
  • Registration status (active / suspended / revoked)
  • Date of first issuance

This is what every marketplace queries when verifying your compliance. It is also what you should verify before any marketplace upload — the legal name on SYDEREP must match the legal name in your marketplace account exactly. Any mismatch causes verification failure. See /guides/idu-not-on-amazon-france for the seven most common verification failure causes.

The publication gap — the most common confusion

The most common operational confusion around the IDU is the gap between eco-organism approval and SYDEREP publication.

Sequence of events:

  1. Your representative files the dossier with the eco-organism.
  2. Eco-organism reviews (typically 5 to 10 business days).
  3. Eco-organism approves and sends the IDU to ADEME.
  4. ADEME runs a weekly batch import into SYDEREP.
  5. IDU becomes publicly queryable on SYDEREP.

Steps 3 to 5 take an additional 5 to 10 business days. So even after you have the IDU in writing from the eco-organism, marketplaces will return "not found" until the public publication. Do not upload during this gap — repeated failed verifications can flag your marketplace account.

Total elapsed time from filing to marketplace-queryable IDU: typically 2 to 3 weeks.

When the IDU does not appear

Beyond the standard publication gap, several specific issues cause the IDU to not appear when expected.

Name mismatch in the filing. If the dossier was filed under a slightly wrong legal name (extra word, different capitalisation, missing entity type suffix), the eco-organism may have approved it but with a different name than your marketplace expects. The IDU exists but does not match. Fix: amend the eco-organism record. Faster fix: amend the marketplace record to match the eco-organism record.

Stream coverage gap. You filed for one stream but your catalog needs three. The IDU you have is real, but it does not cover the SKUs the marketplace flagged. Fix: file the additional streams. One representative mandate can cover multiple.

Revoked IDU. An IDU can be revoked by the eco-organism for non-payment, missed annual declaration, or breach of the mandate. SYDEREP updates within a week of revocation. If your IDU worked six months ago and stopped, this is the most likely cause.

How marketplaces actually use the IDU

Each marketplace runs a slightly different verification, but the structure is similar.

  • Marketplace prompts the seller for IDUs per applicable stream.
  • Marketplace queries SYDEREP with the IDU, expecting a match on producer name + stream.
  • Match: listing remains active. Cache typically refreshes within 24 to 72 hours.
  • No match or mismatch: listing deactivates, seller receives notice with a remediation window.

Amazon France runs this check at quarterly enforcement waves. Cdiscount runs it in real time at listing creation. ManoMano runs it at onboarding and category expansion. Fnac/Darty run it at periodic audits. The IDU is the central object in every marketplace verification.

FAQ

How long after eco-organism approval does my IDU appear on SYDEREP?

Typically 5 to 10 business days. The eco-organism confirms registration internally, then submits to ADEME which runs a weekly batch import into the SYDEREP teleservice. During this gap your IDU technically exists but is not yet publicly queryable. Marketplaces will return "not found" until the public publication. The remedy is patience, not retry — repeated failed uploads to a marketplace can flag your account.

What does the prefix of my IDU mean?

The first characters of an IDU encode the EPR stream. For example, FR-EMB- denotes household packaging, FR-EEE- denotes WEEE (electronics), FR-TLC- denotes textile. The prefix is how marketplaces route your IDU to the correct compliance check field. If you paste a packaging IDU into a WEEE field, the marketplace returns "invalid" because the prefix does not match the expected stream.

Can I verify a competitor’s IDU on SYDEREP?

Yes — SYDEREP is public. You can search by legal name, by IDU, by stream, or by eco-organism. The result shows the producer name, the IDU, the eco-organism, the stream, and the registration status. This is how marketplaces query and how compliance buyers verify suppliers. It is also how you can confirm your own publication once registered.
