Ecosystem is the main eco-organism for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in France, covering household and professional EEE collection and recycling.
Ecosystem operates the largest WEEE collection network in France, processing over 600,000 tonnes per year. Producers adhere, pay an eco-contribution per category of equipment placed on the market, and receive collection and recycling reports.
Any company placing equipment with a plug, battery, sensor, or electronic component on the French market: small appliances, computers, phones, lighting, power tools, IoT devices, e-cigarettes. Trigger is the first placement, regardless of seller location.

Frequently asked questions
- Who has to join Ecosystem?
- Any producer placing products covered by Electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and Portable batteries and accumulators on the French market, whatever the country it is established in, with no minimum volume. The producer is the first company placing the goods on that market: for a distance sale to a French consumer, that is the seller, not the carrier and not the marketplace.
- Can I join Ecosystem without a French company?
- Not directly. A producer with no establishment in France goes through a France-established mandataire, compulsory since 10 July 2026 under Article L. 541-10-9-1 of the Code de l'environnement. The representative signs the membership in the producer's name, then ADEME publishes the IDU within 2 to 3 weeks.
- What does Ecosystem membership cost?
- Two separate amounts. The membership fee runs from EUR 0 to 450 a year depending on the stream. The eco-contribution depends on what you place on the market and follows Ecosystem's published schedule. We take no percentage and no margin on either of them.
- Is Ecosystem the only option?
- No. On Electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and Portable batteries and accumulators, Ecologic, Corepile (merged into Ecosystem in 2025), Screlec, Soren and Batribox are also state-accredited. Joining any one of them satisfies the obligation, and the choice belongs to the producer. They differ on their published schedule, their declaration format and their eco-modulations, not on the legal cover they provide.
- What do I declare once I have joined?
- The volumes you placed on the market the previous year, in the unit that stream uses, on Ecosystem's own calendar. That declaration sets the eco-contribution you owe. A producer joining late regularises the earlier years in which it placed products on the market.
