Ecomaison: EPR Compliance for Furniture and Home Decor Exporters

Ecomaison is the eco-organism accredited for multiple French EPR streams: furniture (DEA), toys, and DIY and garden articles. It does not cover sports and leisure articles, for which Ecologic is the only approved eco-organisation (categories 1 and 2). Non-EU exporters with home decor, furniture or related catalog routinely arrive at Ecomaison via a French marketplace flag.

What does DEA cover?#

DEA stands for Déchets d’Éléments d’Ameublement, furniture waste. The scope:

• Furniture: chairs, sofas, tables, beds, storage units, desks, bookcases.
• Mattresses, sommiers (bed bases), foam toppers.
• Structural home decor: large shelves, modular storage.
• Outdoor furniture: garden chairs, parasols, garden tables.
• Office furniture (for B2C sales; B2B office furniture has a separate sub-stream).
• Furniture-grade upholstered items.

What is out of scope: pure decorative items (vases, picture frames, candles), bedding accessories (pillows, comforters under Refashion), kitchen accessories (under packaging or other streams).

Which streams does Ecomaison run?#

Ecomaison consolidates several historically separate eco-organisms under one operating umbrella. The relevant streams:

• DEA (furniture), the largest by tonnage for home brands.
• Toys, covered in our dedicated toy exporters article.
• DIY and garden articles, covered in our sports/DIY article (sports and leisure articles go to Ecologic, not Ecomaison).
• Office furniture (for some categories).

A producer with a mixed catalog joins Ecomaison for each relevant stream, and each stream gets its own IDU. Ecomaison charges a EUR 50 membership fee per stream, payable within five business days of signing.

How does the filing process work?#

The standard non-EU producer flow:

1. Authorized representative engaged by written mandate (Article L. 541-10-9-1 of the French Environmental Code).
2. Catalog prepared: SKUs by stream, weight per unit, French sales estimate.
3. Membership filed with Ecomaison within two business days of receiving the signed mandate, the first invoice payment and the deposit. Ecomaison charges a EUR 50 membership fee per stream, payable within five business days of signing.
4. IDUs issued per stream and published on SYDEREP.
5. Declarations: Ecomaison declares quarterly by default, or annually on option below 15 t, 1,000 pieces and EUR 2 million of turnover in the stream (all three criteria).

What does it cost? An example#

Non-EU home decor and furniture brand shipping €1.5M/year to France (furniture + home decor + packaging):

• Representative on DEA (furniture) + Packaging: our fee is a fixed annual amount per EPR stream, from €190/year excl. VAT for streams under the eco-organism flat-fee regime, confirmed in a written quote within one business day. A one-time setup per stream and a refundable security deposit are stated in the quote.
• Ecomaison membership fee: EUR 50 per stream, payable within five business days of signing.
• Citeo packaging membership: ~€150/year.
• Eco-contribution DEA (~5,000 kg furniture): ~€2,500-€4,500/year.
• Eco-contribution packaging: ~€800-€1,500/year.

How do marketplaces verify DEA?#

DEA verification on French marketplaces:

• Amazon.fr: Furniture category SKUs trigger DEA check. Listings deactivate if missing.
• Cdiscount: DEA verified at listing creation. See /guides/cdiscount-epr-rejected for the rejection diagnostic.
• ManoMano: DIY/garden furniture verified. Strong enforcement.
• Fnac/Darty: Office furniture and home decor verified at audits.
• Shopify D2C: No marketplace check, but legal obligation under L. 541-10 remains.

The most common gap we see: producers register Citeo (packaging) but not DEA, then get flagged at the first marketplace audit on furniture SKUs.

Does Ecomaison cover both furniture and toys?#

Yes. Ecomaison is accredited for multiple streams including DEA (furniture), toys, and DIY and garden articles. Is bedroom decor like pillows and mattresses furniture under DEA?#

Mattresses are definitively under DEA. Bedding accessories (pillows, comforters) are typically under household linen (Refashion TLC) rather than DEA. The decisive factor is structural function: items that support body weight or provide structural home furniture sit under DEA; soft textile items sit under TLC.

What about decorative wall art, ceramics, glass vases?#

Decorative home goods (vases, picture frames, candle holders) typically fall outside DEA, they are not "furniture" in the functional sense. They do, however, trigger packaging EPR if shipped to French consumers. Confirm with your representative for borderline decorative-but-structural categories.
